Why Do We Accept Heartbreak As Reality But Question Devotion?

Why Do We Accept Heartbreak As Reality But Question Devotion?

Why do we accept heartbreak as reality but question devotion?

Nobody watches a heartbreaking romance and says it’s unrealistic.

Nobody questions the betrayal.

Nobody questions the abandonment.

Nobody questions the years of longing, the misunderstandings, the heartbreak, the person who never quite gets what they want.

We accept those stories instantly.

We call them realistic.

But write a man who remembers.

Write a man who follows through.

Write a man who notices.

Write a man who shows up.

Write a woman who is adored, desired, prioritised and deeply loved.

Suddenly people have questions.

“That doesn’t happen.”

“Men aren’t like that.”

“Real life isn’t like the movies.”

I find that fascinating.

Because somewhere along the way, we’ve become more comfortable believing in disappointment than devotion.

More comfortable believing in struggle than happiness.

More comfortable believing in loss than receiving exactly what we want.

Luxury romance feels different because it refuses to apologise for beauty.

It refuses to apologise for consistency.

It refuses to apologise for attraction, desire, devotion and happy endings.

Not because those things are fantasy.

But because they are worth writing about.

When I sit down to write The Artist, I’m not interested in creating another story about people learning they deserve love.

I’m interested in writing about people who experience it.

People who recognise it.

People who choose it.

People who live inside it.

Perhaps that’s why luxury romance stays with us.

Not because it’s impossible.

But because it reminds us that beautiful love stories do not need to be justified in order to be believed.
